I bought my books for the semester last week, and I'm not even sure that I can use "book" in the plural: I have one textbook for a psychology class and a Bible commentary on CD for a Bible class.
That's the bad news. The good news is that this (finally) frees me up to do some of the reading I had to put off last semester. I still don't know whether to consider reading one of my hobbies because I rarely read for pleasure when I've got dozens of pages of class reading. Nevertheless, here's a list (in no particular order) of books that I might try and engage this semester, most of them recommended by others. Feel free to recommend any other books:
- The Wisdom of Stability (Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove)
- Bound & Determined (Jeanene Reese) - written by an ACU professor I greatly respect.
- The Pursuit of God (A.W. Tozer)
- The Ragamuffin Gospel (Brennan Manning) - lent to me by a friend in high school and still sitting on my shelf. I need to accomplish this book before I graduate.
- A Thread of Grace (Mary Doria Russell) - her The Sparrow was probably my favorite book of what I read last year.
- Gilead (Marilynne Robinson) - recommended by many.
- Who's Afraid of Postmodernism? (James Smith)
- Love is an Orientation (Andrew Marin)
- Predictably Irrational (Dan Ariely) - I had time to read one chapter last semester, and it was fascinating.
- In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manual (Michael Pollan)
- Les Miserables (Victor Hugo) - started this over the Christmas break, but grad school applications and reading for my short course got in the way.
- The Mayor of Castro Street (Randy Shilts)
As is my habit, I'll blog about anything I find particularly compelling. Happy reading!

Brent, I have just read your listing of books that interest you.
Since I have been a long-time reader, I find that as my life pathways change that my choice of want-to reads have continued to change. That is not surprising.
Goals change and life desires and needs affect my need for more enrichment supplements sought by stimulating reading.
I will share some of my choice titles with you later by e-mail.
Best Wishes -- Granddad
"Gilead" was one of my favorite reads in a while. I would also recommend the sequel "Home" I'm intrigued by the Russell book. I also enjoyed "The Sparrow" and "Children of God" immensely.
